Adonis's Story

Adonis was a child of circumstances unacceptable to society, his mother was turned into a tree and his father turned his back on him. Aphrodite was enamored by him so she put him in a box and sent him to Persephone in the underworld to raise him. After he grew up Persephone refused to let him go for she had fallen in love with him. Aphrodite and Persephone fought each other for Adonis until the problem was brought to Zeus. Zeus decided that Adonis would spend1/3 of the year with Persephone and 1/3 of the year with Aphrodite and the last 1/3 he could decide who he wanted to be with. He chose to stay with Aphrodite. Her lover, Ares got jealous and sent a wild boar to kill him. As Adonis was dying Persephone held him weeping, her tears and his blood mixed together creating the flower, Anemone. Zeus saw the beauty it created and felt Aphrodite's pain so he brought Adonis back to life, representing the cycle of change. It promotes the decay of nature in the winter and the revival of beauty in the spring, the caterpillar growing into a beautiful butterfly.
